The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
