We have witnessed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into a figure of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this has happened more gradually, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and since the quickly increasing segment among Americans may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of great price in the Christian story.
It is decidedly absolutely not the account of an authoritative monarch arising; rather, a baby is born to displaced parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to escape secret police. The evident and straightforward fact that the Jesus from scripture calls for a type of extreme compassion centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the general public, but owing to its natural unconventionality requiring to be restrained.
